Nigeria will upgrade the Instrument Landing Systems at the
nation’s major airports.
Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, gave assurance following
complaints by airlines of the disruption of flights by the Harmattan (dusty
weather) alongside humiliation of cancelling President scheduled flights.
While speaking Senator Hadi Sirika said the Instrument
Landing Systems (ILS), will be improved upon to make sure that they are operating
better to reduce the cases of flight cancellation that have in featured every
President Muhammadu Buhari’s was scheduled to visit to
Bauchi then in December 29but was postponed due to bad weather conditions that
we couldn’t handle.
Unfriendly weather has for a long time been one of the problems
of air travel in harmattan season, leading to the delay or complete flight cancellations.
Information as given from the weather station reveals that
visibility during the harmattan season is usually around 600 meters, 200 metres
short of the 800 metres minimally required for a safe aircraft take-off.
